Helping Charities Support Older People to Stay Independent at Home
Charities and community organisations are often the first to see when someone is struggling with loneliness, isolation or a lack of support at home. These challenges can have a significant impact on wellbeing, confidence, and independence.
Homeshare offers a practical community solution that can complement the support many organisations already provide. It matches older people who have a spare room with carefully vetted younger people who provide companionship and around 10 hours of light practical help each week, in exchange for affordable accommodation.
For many older people this brings reassurance, connection and practical day-to-day support that helps them remain living independently in their own home.

Why Charities Introduce Homeshare
Many charities and community groups support people whose needs are social rather than clinical, but still have a significant impact on wellbeing and quality of life. By introducing people to Homeshare, charities can help individuals remain independent, connected, and supported in their own homes. It is not a personal or medical care service, but the presence of a carefully matched sharer can make a meaningful difference to someone’s day-to-day wellbeing.
Homeshare can help by providing
-
companionship and regular social contact
-
reassurance for people living alone
-
light practical help with everyday tasks
-
greater confidence in living independently
-
peace of mind for families
Working with Charities and Community Organisations
Two Generations works with charities and community organisations who share our commitment to supporting older people and strengthening communities. Our work includes raising awareness of Homeshare, providing information for service users and creating referral pathways for individuals who may benefit from companionship and support at home. Examples include:

Age UK (HH&B)
We have worked in partnership with Age UK HHB since 2022 to raise awareness of Homeshare as an option for older people who may benefit from companionship and practical support. We have worked on over 30 refferals resulting in many long term solutions for people wanting to stay at home.
Dementia Friends
Two Generations registered with Dementia Friends in 2023, and members of our team have attended information and training sessions to deepen our understanding of dementia and how best to support older householders.

World Jewish Relief
We supported World Jewish Relief during the Homes for Ukraine programme by carrying out approximately 50 host assessments as part of the safeguarding process.
The Carents Room
We have developed a relationship with The Carents Room around the shared need to support people affected by caring responsibilities, and they have referred a number of individuals to us.

"We’re pleased to be partnering with Two Generations to make
Homeshare widely available for the benefit of everyone across our
three boroughs. Two Generations is the perfect partner to deliver this
service as one of various tools to help combat loneliness and provide
key support at home. They encapsulate the same values and warmth
towards all their clients as us, and we're very happy to work with them
to provide Homeshare to our communities."
Referring someone to Homeshare
If you support an older person who may benefit from companionship and light practical help at home, introducing them to Homeshare is simple.
Step 1 – Share the idea
If someone you support is feeling isolated, less confident at home, or looking for a way to remain independent for longer, you can introduce Homeshare as one possible option.
Step 2 – Put them in touch with us
You can either share our details directly with the individual, or make an introduction to our team by email or phone call.
Step 3 – We take it from there
If Homeshare seems like a good fit, our team will talk things through, answer any questions, carry out the necessary assessments and guide the person through the next steps with care and sensitivity.
We are always happy to have an initial conversation if you would like to discuss whether Homeshare may be appropriate for someone you support. Click here or contact@twogenerations.co.uk
